This course will provide you with the required, specialized skills on how to navigate a ship safely in polar waters. Based on the requirements in the STCW code.

Training is performed 100 % online, and you can train anywhere, anytime, at your own pace. The course material is presented by our highly qualified Furuno Instructor (Master Mariner) in a video format and includes dynamic animations and illustrations.

Level: Basic

Relevant for: This course is a requirement for Masters, Chief Mates, and Officers in charge of a navigational watch on board ships operating in polar waters.

Relevant for mariners on board ships operating in ice infested waters for instance the Bay of Bothnia, Saint Lawrence River and The Great Lakes.

Could also be relevant for anyone interested in how to operate ships in polar waters or ice infested waters. This could include Ship Managers, Technical Superintendents, Technical Staff, Marine Engineers, shore-based personnel; etc.

Duration: 1 - 2 workdays

Admission recommendations: The trainee must hold a certificate as Master, Chief Mate, or Officer in charge of a navigation watch qualified in accordance with regulations II/1, II/2 and II/3 of the STCW Convention, respectively or equivalent as determined by the national administration.

Course content:

-          Ice types, their characteristics, and motions.

-          Vessel performance in ice and low air temperature.

-          Safe operations and ship maneuverability in ice.

-          The legislative requirements for a ship to be compliant with the Polar Code.

-          Crew preparation, working conditions, and safety in polar areas.

-          Prevention of pollution and environmental hazards.

-          Emergency response when in Polar waters.

Training certificate

The training course includes small tests after each lesson, eliminating the need for a final, conclusive test. When you have passed all tests, a certificate is generated immediately on the NavSkills Online platform.

The certificate expires after 5 years.

Technical requirements for online training: A stable internet connection.
